+1 Guessing a compromise between alum, phenolic, which could work well with vintage and/or 'shrill' recordings.

Based on auditioning a small variety of hemp cone drivers Vs the later pulp paper versions, I imagine the difference wouldn't be subtle in that it would be much better damped without the mass normally required to smooth out any 'rough edges' to its performance [sibilance in particular], so less HF roll-off as the bonus.

O. K Phil, you started it. There's a guy here in Ohio with a patent on hemp speaker cones ( Hempopotamus Speakers. He's also on e-pay). Can we get enough interest in doing a mold and making our own paper diaphragms ? ( I want to smoke mine though). I have time and money. We can do carbon film 288's next.
The guy is an incredible liar. And I'm sure Eminence doesn't pay him royalties for their hemp cones.
I've seen his posts on the net claiming to have 755a cones from the original supplier. They have been out of business for decades.
